With the increasing threat of out of control bushfires becoming a regular feature of our environment, through open tender, Moreton Bay Regional Council engaged WCG to investigate and design a methodology that quantitatively assesses the level of risk posed by bushfire hazard to areas of the community that have limited vehicular access and egress. The limited access represents a high threat to the ability for a community to evacuate should the need present itself. The method developed integrated numerous bushfire characteristics that may typically affect a community and spatial analysis data sources to transparently rank various communities in response to the identified hazard rating and to help identify appropriate treatments to remediate the threat.

The ability to effectively allocate resources as a result of this project will assist in increasing the level of protection to the MBRC community in bushfire emergency events.

The WCG Value add

Bushfire Management

  • Determination of spatial attributes for target communities through GIS analysis.
  • Ground truthing of vegetation communities to support GIS analysis and findings.
  • Coordination with the Local Government to integrate Local Council requirements into assessment and methodology.
