Introducing the Towards 2050: Directions Paper for Cairns

26/07/2024

We've proudly partnered with the Cairns Regional Council as well as a diverse range of stakeholders to ensure this strategy reflects Cairns’ shared values and aspirations, and its distinctive identity.

This Directions Paper culminates 12 months of technical studies and in-depth analysis, producing a robust, adaptable and well-informed foundation for the future planning of Cairns. Our passionately dedicated team investigated the drivers for change, learnings from the past, and focuses for growth to build a runway for Cairns to propel towards 2050.

A few key highlights from the Directions Paper are:

  • A Community-Led Approach: Informed by extensive community input, the strategy preserves Cairns' cherished lifestyle while planning for sustainable growth.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Embedded Blue + Green principles ensure the protection and enhancement of its natural assets; a crucial focus for future generations.
  • A framework for Urban Growth: Three strategic pathways guide the journey towards a resilient and thriving Cairns - Building on Foundations, Vibrant Centres, and Compact City with a Southern Focus.

But this Directions Paper is just the beginning. Next, we will be developing a comprehensive Growth Strategy that will build on, refine and solidify these directions based on community feedback. The Growth Strategy will serve as a catalyst for tangible change, inspiring communities to embrace innovative approaches amidst evolving circumstances.

A big thank you to Ed Johnson for your visionary leadership and fierce support, as well as our consultant team Jenny Roughan, Kerry Riethmuller and Leisa Prowse FIAP2 for their invaluable contributions to this project to help us shape Cairns’ future.

We will continue to work together to ensure that Cairns in 2050 is a great place to live, work and explore. Discover the full Directions Paper https://lnkd.in/gGPuthPX to learn more about Cairns’ vision and opportunities for involvement.
