Disciplines/Services

  • Planning

The new Science Learning Centre at Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s Spring Hill campus seeks to provide students with a series of ‘teachable moments’, with design elements such as the alignment of the central staircases pointing to true north, polar north and magnetic north and the representation of the space-time-continuum through the central void that remains open to the natural sky. Developed over existing basketball courts, the impressive building spans six levels of chemistry, biology and physics labs, general learning areas, staff rooms, collaboration spaces and impressive 600 capacity function space, as well as an under croft for physical education and play space.

The WCG Value add

Planning

  • BGGS were committed to delivering high-quality educational facilities for the education of students in a compressed timeframe, aligning the construction program with School holiday periods to minimise disruption to learning.
  • WCG provided a development application strategy to minimise key risks including Heritage, to ensure that our client, BGGS, were able to deliver within the required timeframe.
  • WCG managed the pre-lodgement engagement phase and ultimately prepared, lodged and managed the development application, including statutory processes involving the local government authority and State referrals.
  • Lodged to Council in November 2018, we obtained approval in early February 2019 delivering an approval in three months, including the Christmas shut down period.
  • Approved in February 2019, the first students commenced learning within the SLC in October 2020.
