The Paint Factory is well-known creative space with internationally acclaimed artists currently working out of the redundant space. This precinct has the potential to create a new benchmark under Brisbane City Council’s Creative Brisbane and Suburban Renewal.

The project includes reimagining the former site into a new mixed-use precinct proposing nearly 7000m2 of creative space and approximately 200 residential. WCG has been part of the project for several years, leading the design process, public realm design and statutory planning process of this key site for Brisbane.

Key project challenges included:

  • Overcoming the disconnect between the locality, being directing adjacent low density residential and open space, and the planning framework identifying the site as a strategic industrial area
  • Creating a site management framework to protect the longevity of the project and destination for the arts
  • Managing expectations of an established local community through development approval strategy and community engagement
  • Managing the challenges and complexity of the planning framework.
